Along with producing live streaming sporting events, athletic departments across the country are tasked daily and focused on building their brand.  And, there is no better way to market that brand then through producing and telling student-athlete stories on and off the field.  Storytelling that is both informative and entertaining.  Storytelling that takes alumni and fans inside the sport.  That was the goal of a “get to know the team” video series I helped produce for the University of Hartford and it’s inaugural women’s lacrosse program.  Twenty-four, 24-second rapid-fire videos with teammates interviewing teammates leading up to their “First Flight” on February 24th, 2018.  A collaborative effort working with Hawks coaches, Hawks communications and student videographers and editors.  An opportunity for students to gain invaluable experience in many aspects of production techniques and for the student-athletes to learn and practice the skill of interviewing and answering questions in front of a camera.

The day we taped the “24 in 24” videos we also used the opportunity to produce a promotional spot for the Hawks “First Flight.”  Their inaugural match.  Planning ahead, and maximizing studio resources and everyone’s time, enabled us to tape Coach Meg Decker and a handful of her student-athletes delivering wild lines to camera.  The script I wrote focused on “firsts,” and “having only one chance to make a first impression.”  We utilized the same background we used for the “get to know” videos and, with some shadowy lighting, we were able to create a mood that was impactful and drove home the script and the promotional message.
